It’s important to us that both you and your child feel comfortable in our care.
We love having kids come to our office for their first dental visit. Both Drs. Garrison and the support team are trained in seeing children of all ages. Three years is an appropriate age for a first visit.
First Visit Tips
A child’s visit does involve some help and preparation from the parents or guardians. Here are some first visit tips:
- Bring your child for a preview of the office
- Read books with them about going to the dentist
- Review the purpose of the visit and how to behave
- Speak positively about your own dental experiences
First Exam
During the first exam we will:
- Examine your child’s mouth, teeth and gums
- Attempt a simple and gentle cleaning
- Evaluate adverse habits like thumb sucking
- Assess the need for supplemental fluoride
- Review treatment if needed
- Teach simple tips for cleaning teeth and gums at home
- Suggest a schedule for regular visits
Cavity Prevention in Children
Most of the time cavities are caused by a diet high in sugar and/or infrequent brushing. We recommend brushing twice a day for two minutes. Children may need to work up to this routine. Making it a fun family event has been a successful strategy.
We suggest limiting sticky snacks and treats between meals; instead, we encourage drinking water and eating raw fruits and vegetables.
Sealant coating can be placed in the grooves of teeth to protect the tooth from decay. These grooves are too small for a toothbrush bristle to clean well and often contain cavity-causing bacteria. At our office, sealants are applied quickly with no need for numbing agents.
